Bauhaus-Universität Weimar College Student Scholarships

The College Student Scholarships overall aim of the Research training group is to assess the reliability, safety and robustness of numerical models. This evaluation considers a wide range of aspects and models. This includes, but is not restricted to, models that describe loads or the material and structural behavior of systems in structural engineering. Of particular interest are the interactions of these models in complex systems. Their influence on the quality of models of complex coupled systems is to be determined.

Basis College Student Scholarships for the research are the results that have been realized during the first project phase. Further research will be carried out in work groups of two to three PhD students under the guidance of two Postdoctoral students. Each doctoral student is supervised by three professors, two of which are professors in Weimar and the third being one of our international partners. Following an intensive training phase the participating doctoral students will develop the subject of their theses in collaboration with their supervisors. The College Student Scholarships combination of the models and methods of the specific projects then provides the means for handling the complex problems encountered in the working groups.

We expect excellent degrees from the applicants in one or several of the following subjects:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Structural and Soil Mechanics/Dynamics
  • Materials Science
  • Applied Mathematics & Computer Science

We see ourselves as an international research training group. Very good English skills are a prerequisite for internal communication, for publications in scientific journals, and for a mandatory stay abroad, serving the scientific exchange with our international cooperation partners.

In order to allow a fast realization of models, of couplings, and of evaluation methods, command of one or several programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Java, Python, Matlab) is of advantage.

The College Student Scholarships positions are available as of June till October 2011. Funding is granted for a maximum period of three years and is compensated according to TV/L 13 E. It is the aim of Bauhaus-Universität to increase to number of female scientists. Therefore women in particular are requested to apply. Handicapped people will be favored in case of equal qualification.

Please send your application in digital form (.pdf) until May 15, 2011 to Dr. Tom Lahmer (tom.lahmer@uni-weimar.de) with the code number B/GRK-09/11-18/11.

PhD Position College Student Scholarships

College Student Scholarships One position is for a promotion to numerical simulations, which start on graphical processing units (GPUs). In a collaboration between the groups and Dynamat EELAB UGent, we are currently developing this high-performance simulation software that simulates the one hand, be used as the energy efficiency of electrical steel in electromagnetic devices, and read on the other side, and write , for example on the process hard drives. These College Student Scholarships calculations are numerically very intensive. Recently we have begun to develop a multi-function micromagnetic code - nicknamed the "mumax" - which can run on dual GPU and CPU hardware. With the massively parallel architecture of GPUs, the program now works on 100 times faster on this hardware. However, there is room for many techniques and optimization computer many new features such as the development of communication systems for multi-GPU implementations future.

Profile

We are College Student Scholarships currently looking for a new PhD student with a masters degree in either informatics/computer science, engineering, physics or mathematics. The research topic is the optimization of numerical methods for GPU hardware. Although applied to micromagnetic simulations, no specific knowledge of physics or magnetism is needed. A general interest for numerical methods is required though.

You will join College Student Scholarships the work on topics like numerical techniques to solve large systems of coupled differential equations, fast summation techniques, fast Fourier transforms, etc. Both the underlying algorithms as well as their implementation on CPU and GPU hardware are to be optimized. A working knowledge of C/C++ is needed for the low-level GPU implementation. Other parts of the software are now written in C++/Java/Python/Go and scripting languages. They can be extended by modules written in any high-level programming language.
